Finally, a camp designed for us! All of the fun, none of the heteronormative misery! Camp Q is a week-long camp experience for LGBTQ+ youth and allies. Trans, lesbian, gay, enby, cis, bi, supportive, genderqueer, or some flavor of gloriously queer: together we will experience the healing power of community and the natural world. This is time for us to explore and share our identities, and how we connect to meaning, as we build an atmosphere of trust and support. Camp Q is a program of Holmes Camp, just one hour north of New York City, which strives to help people connect to their authentic self and work for a more just world. It’s camp with a twist – all the fun stuff (swimming, boating, archery, ropes courses, music, camp fires, s’mores, crafts) and a real exploration of our LGBTQ+ history, realities, celebrations, challenges, and ways to organize.
New York City Field Trip:
We are close enough to New York that we will take one day to see Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway, stop and walk through Greenwich Village, and see Stonewall Inn, where the modern LGBTQ+ movement is considered by many to have begun. Our time will focus around understanding, exploring, and feeding our spiritual selves and we’ll do so from the various lenses of LGBTQ experience.
Don’t panic! We’re not out to convince anyone that their path is wrong, and to substitute the “right” one. We learn through sharing. High School age teens of all faiths, of no faith, or are questioning are welcome. Be prepared to explore spirituality and be open to hearing other perspectives. Holmes Camp is a Presbyterian camp so you’ll see Christian symbols and be invited to sing some songs from that tradition; but even as we are in a Christian setting our understanding of spirituality is not limited to a Christian frame. For those who are Christian or were raised in a Christian context, we are also well aware of the damage done to the LGBTQ+ community in the name of religion.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve been out since you were five, if you’re just beginning to be aware, or if you are an ally. Know that we will honor your story, and support you on your journey.
At camp you’ll sleep in a platform tent, on a bunk bed with other people your age. We will not be housing according to gender. Changing rooms are available for privacy.
This week is about fun and growth and healing and claiming our connection to whatever it is that gives us life, joy, and inspiration – and exploring how we might work towards a more just world. You will leave with lifelong friends, a deep appreciation for the power and support of being in an LGBTQ+ community, and of course a sense of pride and gratitude for being who you are meant to be.
*if you are old enough to be in entering 10th grade in the fall, or to have just graduated, but are not currently enrolled in High School, you are welcome to apply as well!
